The Last Escape

Donna gazed out at the serene lake, its tranquility a stark contrast to the turmoil within. She and Trey had escaped to this secluded cabin for their final days together. An inoperable brain tumor had left Donna with a heartbreaking choice: end her life peacefully, before pain consumed her.
The doctor's words echoed in her mind: "You'll lose yourself to agony." Determined to preserve her dignity, Donna had chosen voluntary euthanasia.
Trey's arms wrapped around her, holding her close. "I'm here for you, always," he whispered.
"I wish we could stay here forever," Donna said, tears streaming down her face.
Trey's eyes welled up, but he forced a reassuring smile. "We'll make the most of our time."
As sunset faded to twilight, Donna began her preparations. Trey handed her a small cup containing the prescribed medication.
Just as Donna raised the cup to her lips, a sudden noise echoed from outside – twigs snapping, footsteps crunching. Trey's eyes darted toward the darkness.
"Who's there?" Donna called out.
Silence.
Trey's grip on Donna tightened. "Wait here."
He stepped into the darkness, leaving Donna alone. The silence stretched, punctuated only by crickets.
Donna's anxiety grew. Had Trey planned more than a peaceful goodbye?
Suddenly, the cabin door creaked open. Trey stood in the entrance, his eyes locked on Donna's.
"Time's running out," he whispered, his voice low and menacing.
Donna's heart skipped a beat. Had she misjudged Trey's intentions?
With trembling hands, Donna raised the cup again. But as the liquid touched her lips, she hesitated.
"Will you stay with me?" Donna asked.
Trey's smile chilled her blood. "Forever."
In that moment, Donna realized she wasn't alone in her fate – and Trey's love was a deadly obsession.
