A Heartbreaking Court Update

Yesterday, November 19, we attended court for D'Angelo's (Jay) update, filled with hope and anxiety. Would he finally come home or take the next step towards healing? The courtroom's eerie silence and cold atmosphere foreshadowed disappointing news.

As we sat down, everyone began discussing the case, and the judge's tone made me increasingly uncomfortable, hinting that good news was unlikely. We have been working tirelessly to secure a long-term facility placement for Jay, and initially, we were told he would leave the Youth Detention Center (YDC) yesterday. He even came with his belongings. My heart swelled with excitement, envisioning him home for the holidays.

However, our months-long effort to secure placement suggested a different outcome. The judge confirmed my fears: Jay would remain at YDC until a long-term facility accepts him, potentially taking up to six agonizing months.

😭Seeing my ten-year-old's excitement crushed was unbearable. 😭

Before the court proceedings, Jay rested his head on my shoulder and relaxed for about a hour and all seemed right. I even was able to take a peaceful nap, just knowing I could be around him with no handcuffs or security, just a child needing love and affection. He was just my Jay, a kid who needed his Mommy.

When Jay realized he wouldn't be coming home, despair overwhelmed him. He made a scene when being transported back to YDC. My husband and a mental health support person helped the officer restrain him and get him on the transport bus.

Witnessing this broke me. I broke down and had to leave the room. My heart has been aching since May, when I first called the police. Feeling powerless, I'm limited to supporting Jay through phone calls, regular visits, collaborating with agencies for his care/ placement and providing essentials during his absence.
