A Preventable Tragedy: The Case of Anthony Mitchell

As many of you know, I have a son with mental illnesses who has had multiple encounters with the police. These interactions have been so concerning that the police have advised me to seek alternative help when he acts out, rather than calling them. I realized I needed to get him the support he needed, or his story could have had a very different and potentially tragic outcome.

The case of Anthony Mitchell, a 33-year-old man who died on January 26, 2023, in Walker County, Alabama, raises important questions about the treatment of individuals with mental illness within the justice system. According to reports, Mitchell's family requested a medical welfare check on January 12, 2023, which led to a police response. During the interaction, Mitchell allegedly shot at a deputy and was subsequently charged with attempted murder.

He was taken into custody and later died in jail due to hypothermia and sepsis from medical neglect.

Upon arrival at the jail, Mitchell was reportedly disoriented, non-combative, and unable to follow instructions. He was placed in a unit referred to as the "drunk tank". Further investigation revealed that Mitchell had been subjected to excessive force during his arrest, including being stomped in the genitals while handcuffed, having his face jammed into a police vehicle, and being kicked and dragged into the vehicle. These actions likely contributed to his inability to stand or walk upon arrival at the jail, as they reported.

They left Anthony Mitchell naked, cold, and without basic necessities, including food, water, a mattress, or a blanket, while he was in custody. Despite his obvious need for medical attention, he wasn't taken seriously. Mitchell was reportedly covered in feces and exhibited severe mental health symptoms, talking incoherently about "demons" and "portals". The jail staff allegedly used the excuse that he was combative to deny him medical care.

As of 2025, it's been reported that 14 people associated with Mitchell's death have been arrested and charged. Mitchell's death was ruled a homicide due to hypothermia and sepsis from medical neglect. Former correctional officer Joshua Conner Jones pleaded guilty to federal charges related to Mitchell's death, admitting that he and other officers conspired to deny Mitchell humane conditions, resulting in his death. Jones stated, "Collectively, we did it. We killed him".

I can only imagine that Anthony Mitchell died scared and alone. No one deserves to EVER go through something like this, especially when you are going through a mental health crisis.

As someone who has personal experience with mental health issues within my family, I understand the complexities and challenges that can arise when individuals with mental illness interact with law enforcement and the justice system. This case highlights the need for greater awareness, understanding, and support for individuals with mental health conditions, as well as the importance of providing adequate medical care and treatment.

I hope justice is served for Anthony Mitchell and his family, and they find peace and closure.

It's disturbing that it took so long for anyone to be held accountable for Anthony's death.

My heart goes out to Anthony Mitchell's family and loved ones. It's appalling that he was subjected to such inhumane treatment while in custody.
