Accountability in Medicine: Thoughts on the Paolo Macchiarini Documentary

After watching the documentary about Paolo Macchiarini on Netflix, I was struck by the complexities of his case. Macchiarini was a renowned surgeon who developed a method involving plastic windpipes with absolutely NO research(not even on animals). His colleagues knew something was't right and told the hospital about his transgressions and the hospital turned on the colleagues and made their life a living nightmare. I feel as though, Karolinska University Hospital, was just as responsible as Paolo himself.
The documentary explores the experiences of the patients who underwent this procedure, as well as the professional and personal consequences for Macchiarini.
The patients who were involved in Macchiarini's method include Sadiq Kanaan, Hannah Warren, Yesim Cetir, Alexander Zozulya, Yulia Tuulik, Christopher Lyles, and Andemariam Teklesenbet Beyene.
The documentary also touches on the experiences of Benita Alexander, who was engaged to Macchiarini at one point and got deceived by him. Later it was discovered that he was already married with two children and even a dog in Barcelona.
Macchiarini's case has raised questions about medical innovation, research, and oversight. He was convicted of gross assault and other crimes related to his medical practice and received a 2.5-year sentence in Sweden. In my opinion, if he would have been convicted in the US; he would most likely be in prison for the rest of his life but to this day; he is walking around a "free man".

🙏🏾🫶🏾My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who were impacted by Macchiarini's "work". May they find closure and peace.🙏🏾🫶🏾

Oh wow definitely out of the states. With any trials fda HAS to approve those methods and you have to do your share of research in other ways to ensure its validity. I wonder how in the heck he was able to do all of this. I hate the young lady had to be lied and dragged when he had a whole entire other life. Very good review!
