It feels like the norm now that whenever something exciting or devastating happens, someone is pulling out their phone to record it. Those moments—captured on video—end up etched into our collective memory forever.

It makes me wonder: what if the past had been recorded the same way?

The Titanic

What if someone on the lower decks or in a lifeboat had filmed the Titanic sinking? Maybe the voices would have been:

“Why are they locking this gate? We just need to go upstairs.”

“The floor feels uneven—are we tilting?”

“It’s only water on the steps, don’t panic.”

“I thought the lifeboats were for later—why are people running?”

“Just hold the baby tighter until they tell us what to do.” "It's too cold to be out here; let's go back to the room."

What if there had been recordings from inside the gas showers, where hundreds were killed? We might have heard:

“It’s too crowded in here—move over!”

“They said it’s a shower, but where’s the water?”

“Don’t let go of my hand, it’s so dark.”

“Stop pushing, there’s no room to breathe.”

“When we get out, let’s meet by the gate—we are getting away.”

And what if there had been recordings from inside the North Tower, the very first building struck? Those people didn’t know what was coming. Their voices might have been:

“Did you feel that? The lights just flickered.”

“Something shook—maybe a generator blew?”

“Stay calm, it’s probably nothing.”

“What is that?!”

And maybe from someone standing silently at the window, watching something large rushing closer—no words, just a sharp inhale of breath before everything went black.

Would those perspectives have saved more lives? Or would they simply have given us a clearer, more human understanding of what people actually went through in those unimaginable times?
